Part 3 : Actual examples through videos and pictures – The reason March chose a Dual tree reticle over a FFP reticle for 1-10×24 Shorty FFP scope
Posted 10/05/2021
After DEON (manufacturer of March Scopes) launched the 1-10×24 Shorty FFP scope, we received many inquiries to make a tree reticle for this scope. We put a lot of thought into this discussing with our customers and dealers. The most difficult decision for us was whether to design the tree reticle in FFP or in dual reticle (combination of FFP and SFP). The technical and assembly challenges with respect to dual reticles are extreme and the tolerances required in assembly of dual reticles is such that very few manufacturers are able to do it, especially with a 10X zoom ratio. However we wanted to combine merits of both FFP and SFP reticles to benefit shooters and this is the reason for our decision.
We will explain Part 1 to 3 in each article. You can click the headlines below in blue and jump to the section you are interested.
(Part 1) Characteristics of each reticle (FFP, SFP, Dual) reticle
(Part 2) Difference of the reticle manufacturing method (wire, glass, fiber dot)
(Part 3) Actual examples
Now we will show you actual examples. *Please note that these videos are taken by a handy phone. The purpose of these videos is to simply show you how the reticle will look throughout the magnification range. We apologize that the image quality is very low and far from the actual image which you will achieve with your naked eye.
FMC-2 reticle in 1-8×24 FFP scope
We compared the FMC-2 reticle against the DR-1 dual reticle as it is easy to notice the difference. If you prefer FFP reticle with a smaller center circle, we have the FMC-1 reticle with a single inner circle or FMC-3 reticle with a floating dot in a single circle. We made the center circle large enough to be usable at lower magnification but it becomes larger as the magnification increases as you can see in the video below.
DR-1 dual reticle in 1-10×24 Shorty FFP scope
In the video it is hard to tell but the center fiber dot is actually brighter than the center circle in FMC-2 reticle assembled in 1-8×24 scope. This is because a fiber dot reticle is manufactured differently from FMC-2 which is a glass reticle. (Please refer to Part 2). Center fiber dot in the DR-1 reticle is daylight bright and can be used as a dot sight at lower power. The center dot and cross lines are in SFP and only the scales are in FFP. As the center fiber dot does not increase its size at higher magnification like the FFP reticle, you will be able to have an uncluttered clear view at higher magnification making it easier for long range precision shooting. Also as the size of the center dot is consistent throughout the entire magnification range it is fully usable at lower magnification unlike some FFP reticles with fine lines and small center part at lower magnification.
We cut pictures from the videos. We apologize that the image quality is even worse than actual pictures…(^^;)
It may be hard to tell but the center fiber dot in the dual DR-1 reticle (right) is daylight bright and much brighter than the FMC-2 reticle.
In the FMC-2 reticle as other FFP reticles, center dot and reticle lines increase at higher magnification. As the center dot and reticle lines in the DR-1 dual reticle are in SFP, only the scales will increase at higher magnification maintaining a clear uncluttered view.
We compared the FMC-2 reticle against the DR-1 dual reticle as it is easy to notice the difference. If you prefer a FFP reticle with a smaller center circle, we have the FMC-1 reticle with a single inner circle or a FMC-3 with a floating dot in the single circle.
The way we make the fiber dot in DR-1 reticle is different from the glass reticle as in FMC-2. Fiber dot lights itself and is much brighter than the glass reticle. (Please refer to Part 2). In the dual DR-1 reticle, the center fiber dot and the reticle lines are in SFP showed in brown numbers in the image below. Blue numbers are for FFP. The diameter of the center dot at 1x is 1Mil.
Thickness of the center circle of the FMC-2 reticle (FFP) is 0.5MIL at 1x. Center fiber dot in the DR-1 reticle is thicker than the center circle of FMC-2 at 1x as well.
In order to combine merits of both FFP and SFP reticles to benefit shooters, we decided to make a dual reticle for 1-10×24 shorty FFP scope. However, each reticle has different characteristics so please choose according to your preference.
